Clay is recorded as working in Wellingborough in “Exhibition of Early clocks and Watches” by W.N. Terry. This publication dealt with and exhibition held n Northampton in 1966 and is the only published work on Northamptonshire clockmakers. Unfortunately, the booklet gives no dates for Clay’s working. In Dennis Moore’s “British Clockmakers & Watchmakers Apprentice Records 1710-1810” he is recorded as having taken Ebeneezer Cavitt as an apprentice in Wellingborough on 19th June 1755 for a period of 7 years.
